Does Wearing Makeup Make You A Liar?

Does wearing makeup make you a liar?

A slightly different post to my usual reviews or favourites, but I was inspired to write this post after I saw a comment on a YouTube video saying beauty vloggers are teaching girls to hide what they really look like. They then went on to say wearing makeup is lying because you're hiding who you really are, and that the only reason people use makeup is because they don't like how they look. I replied back and the person replied off topic saying that rather than wearing makeup we should focus on improving our intelligence and us as a person (if we are doing this are we still lying?). Honestly, I have no idea where this person got the correlation that women who wear makeup can't be working to become a brighter, better and more intelligent person. The comment as a whole got me thinking though about reasons I wear makeup, why others wear it and what people from an outsiders point of view think.

To start, as much as I love wearing makeup I don't dislike how I look. I think I have great skin, I don't think I'm bad looking and some days I do wake up look in the mirror and think I look good without my makeup on. I don't think there's anything wrong with me saying that, I feel like I've got to an age where I can appreciate what I like and dislike about myself and realise that some aspects of me I can't change. As an adult I think you have to get to a point where you think "Hey, I don't like my arms but I've got amazing legs and I look great in this dress" and you stop the self loathing you may have gone through in your teen years and instead realise how great you are. If wearing makeup gives women the confidence to go in to a boardroom and close a deal or walk in to a courtroom and win a case or even just give them the confidence to leave the house in the morning, is it not a worthwhile investment? If you have confidence without makeup then great, but don't act superior to those that do want to wear makeup or make false accusations about them as a person. I think I speak for a lot of women when I say the parts of my body that I want to change are not the ones that I can cover with makeup.

The one thing I'm most confused about is how a person can't be improving themselves as a person. I'm currently studying for a degree in Business and Economics, I have a part time job in the holidays and upload to this blog at least once a week when I have the time. At no point has wearing makeup affected my progression in life as a person, if anything it has helped me. If I'm sat in a lecture and I'm feeling confident about how I look that day I'm more likely to contribute, answer questions and join in with discussions because I don't care if anyone is looking because I think I look great. Since I have become more interested in makeup and I've started this blog I feel I have an interesting hobby to talk about and that I have become more motivated and organised as a person. Through my interest in makeup I have improved as a person in my skills of the internet, whether that be my knowledge of social media or HTML, my photography skills - I'm still working on them, but I think they're getting better - or my written language. Through one little interest I have learnt and developed a lot through a hobby spurred on by this interest. There are so many blogs I come across where people are studying for a degree in nursing, teaching, marketing or I'll find a blogger working in finance or recruitment. The blogger Inthefrow has a PhD for god's sake, you don't get much better than that! As bloggers we have all progressed through different paths and all become individual people, but we all share the same love of makeup and beauty.

I think a lot of people need to realise that women aren't wearing make up to impress strangers. I have been in a happy relationship for over a year now, I honestly don't care if the guy who walks past me in the street thinks I look good, yes it's nice to get a compliment but it's not what I strive for when I'm getting ready in the mornings. If I was wearing makeup for other people I wouldn't have 7/8 eyeshadow palettes because I know that the people I see on a daily basis can't tell whether I'm wearing eyeshadow from Rimmel or Urban Decay. I'm wearing it because I want to, I want to spend time in the morning messing with my makeup and deciding what look to have that day. I want to look in the mirror and think I look amazing for myself not for the strangers on the bus. Of course this doesn't mean that I don't want to portray the best version of myself to everyone, but we as women aren't here to please men - or anyone for that matter - and be there to look good for all the men we walk past in the street, it's no longer the 1970's where women are just there as objects. If someone is that focused on you wearing makeup doesn't that make them more shallow than you for wanting to look good for yourself?

A person is allowed to express themselves in which ever way they choose, if a woman chooses makeup to creatively express herself then let her. If makeup gives a woman confidence to leave the house and become a happy person then the happiness and confidence will radiate from her, the glow that the happiness gives her will be what you notice, not the red lipstick. If you can't look past a woman's makeup to see their natural beauty radiating through, I think it's you who needs to focus on improving yourself, not her.

If people really think those who wear makeup are lying to them, they should realise if I want to lie to them about myself, do they not think I would create a better lie than that I have rosy cheeks, pink lips and golden eyelids?

I'd love to hear your opinions on the topic!

  2. You are absolutely right, I can def relate to this post. I also hate those kinda people who are being so judgmental about others' decisions. We wear makeup because we want to, because we like putting it on, because makeup is ART and some people need to realize that. I also don't wear makeup to impress others, I wear it because I like it, because I have the rights to do it and it's one of my hobbies. Not all girls wear makeup because we want to hide, I am happy with what I look naturally and sometimes I like it better without makeup on but it's our own choice and if we like to put makeup on then it is up to us. I hear you, love :)

    1. Exactly! I put makeup on just out of boredom and for fun, sitting doing my makeup relaxes me and is enjoyable to do even if I'm not going out. Like you I'm confident in how I look but some days I just want hot pink lips and lined eyelids ;) x

  3. Great post! I wear make up because I just feel better in myself with it on and, like you said, it makes me feel more confident - it's not for anyone else but it annoys me when non makeup wearers suggest that must be the reason I wear it!? I'd love to be confident enough to go bare faced but I'm just not and am actually okay with that! You worded my thoughts perfectly :)

    1. Thank you, it doesn't matter if you aren't confident enough to go bare faced, they're the stubborn ones who can't look past some lipstick! x

  4. Great post thank you for taking the time to tackle this issue. You're absolutely right wearing make up does not affect our intelligence or who we are as a person. I wear make up most days not because I lack confidence but because I enjoy make up. This doesn't change the fact that I have a degree and worked hard to get where I am in my profession.
No one has the right to judge you for wearing make up or not wearing make up.

    1. Thank you, and it's so true, I wear makeup even if I'm staying in because getting dressed and getting ready just makes me feel motivated, not because of my confidence x

  5. You're totally right! I hate that people think you are less smarter just because you like to wear makeup or pamper yourself! It's so wel written, I really liked how you have expressed it.

  9. I love this post as even though I don't wear make up on a daily basis I do like to wear a bit of eye liner and lipstick when I go out with my friends and it's definitely not because I'm trying to hide my face! I just like to do it and although I do like getting ccompliments, I mostly do it for fun and I always feel really confident and happy when I wear it. As you mentioned, if it gives someone confidence, I don't really see a problem with it. Amazing post (You've got a new subscriber!)

  10. Really interesting post - I was thinking a lot today about the stereotypes women get if they blog or like makeup - it's so stupid. I think makeup is a way in which you can really express yourself creatively as well as fashion.
