Review | Tanya Burr Lip Gloss in Afternoon Tea

To start, lip gloss is defiantly not my thing, I love a good bold matte lip all year round. I don't mind a satin finish and at most I can handle a coloured balm, but lip glosses are something I've never really got on with. I tried some from Maybelline in the summer that I quite liked, but wouldn't really say they changed my opinion of glosses in general.  I'm not trying not to like them, I almost want to, I imagine they would easier to handle when on the move, so when Tanya Burr released her lip gloss range months ago I was intrigued to see what they were like. They received rave reviews from everyone, people claiming they're comparable to Chanel lip glosses and other people saying they converted them to lip glosses.

On first impressions I think the packaging is cheap looking, I think it looks like they tried to squeeze everything on to the front and that they're the kind of product that would come free in a magazine. I understand they're for a young teen audience but their retail price is £6.99 so they're the same price as Revlon and L'oreal lip glosses, which in my opinion are the higher end of the drugstore, so I'd expect packaging a bit more sleek and professional. I'd say this was probably the main reason as to why I didn't originally try them because the packaging is really not to my liking, and I'd rather just spend the money on a brand I can trust.

I eventually picked one up when Superdrug had them on offer, I wanted to try Ruth Crilly's dry shampoo so decide to do a double whammy in terms of YouTuber products. I had slightly high hopes for this, on one hand I knew that a lot of the reviews would be positive because they're friends with Tanya or because she's a fellow blogger, but then I also thought people can't be THAT generous with their reviews just because someone is a blogger. After using the lipgloss a few times, I've come to the conclusion that people really are generous with reviews if they know you. I have never been so disappointed in a lip product, ever.

One of the main selling points of these lip glosses seems to be their smell, people love it and say it smells like strawberry Fruittella. I see where they're coming from, but to me it smells really plasticy and just awful, I smell the strawberry for a second and then the bad smell hits me, so this didn't really sell me. Another thing I've noticed is how much the product separates on the lips and becomes very patchy within an hour of wearing it, my boyfriend even pointed it out the other day and you know something's bad when even your boyfriend can see problems with it. I've tried it alone, with a lipstick and with a lipliner, but I face the same problem with all of them. The product just separates and dries my lips out like nothing else, every time I've worn this I've found my lips have been dry and flakey for a few days afterwards.

There are some positives to it in that the product glides on to the lips effortlessly, I like the applicator and find it hugs the lips perfectly, and when the product is initially on the lips it feels really smooth. The colour looks beautiful and is a pretty pink with a peachy undertone and a slightly golden sheen to it. These positives really don't last long though and certainly don't warrant buying another one.

Maybe I got a bad batch, it's definitely possible, but honestly I think it's unlikely. As I said, I had high hopes for these because Tanya really appeared to have put a lot in to them, so I was expecting a great product from a YouTuber like Ruth Crilly and Pixiwoo have both achieved. I really can't recommend these, I'm almost tempted to try another to see if I had a bad batch, but I can't justify £6.99 just to see if it was a bad one. I don't know what others are seeing in these glosses, but I'm definitely not seeing it.

  1. it's a shame you didn't get on with this product, i still haven't tried them because i wasn't sure whether the people giving it good reviews were just being nice because she's a fellow blogger/youtuber - nice post anyway haha :-)

  3. So get what you mean about the packaging! I haven't tried her lip glosses yet because I didn't quite believe all the hype about them - glad I did give them a miss from the sound of your experience with them!

    Great post! Charlotte xx

    1. I wish I'd never given in to the hype, in hindsight listening to bloggers who's skincare routine is worth £300 I should've known they may have been exaggerating a bit with these! x

  4. Completely agree with the packaging! I would've expected better! For us aussie's over here, we have to but her products and all other youtubers online and for that reason alone I don't want to spend almost double charge and postage to get it to my house and to end up not liking it! Thanks for the post now I can put my money towards a new laptop and not a lip gloss haha

  5. Such a shame it turned out so badly for you, it has a lovely color though. I'm also not a fan of lipglosses, my hair always get stuck on them. You did a great review! xx

    1. Thank you! and someone tweeted saying certain colours are different formulas, so maybe that's why you're loving them? x

  9. I've got the exact same colour and mine did the same thing. I agree with pretty much everything you said. I found the went on so effortlessly but then felt really 'heavy' and gloopy. I think people don't post negative reviews because the don't want to look like the only one who doesn't like something so they just say nothing at all, or like you said, post a good review because it's the 'norm' and because they're a fellow blogger/YouTuber.
I love Tanya Burr and think she's a prime example of someone who worked hard and gained recognition for it but also stayed true to her roots. She seems so lovely but I was really disappointed with this product, but that doesn't mean I'll stop watching her videos or reading her blog!
    Great, honest review! ♥

    1. Yes, I'm not subscribed to her but she does seem to have a stronger work ethic in comparison to a lot of other vloggers and it's clear she's passionate about this line. Bad reviews can only really help her to improve on what she has. Thank you! x
