Recipe: How to make your own granola

Recipe: How to make your own granola
Granola is something I have started to love eating over the past year, I love the crunchy taste of the oats, honey and nuts mixed together in clusters and it makes me feel a lot healthier eating nuts and oats in the morning rather than sugar coated flakes, but compared to other cereals it can get expensive. I was also noticing that towards the end of the box the taste disappears and I'm left with what might as well be cardboard for breakfast - not very appetising. So I decided to try and make my own, turns out it's a lot tastier and cheaper than boxed granola, but is super easy to make.

Ingredients
3 cups of rolled oats - not instant, they're full of sugar and preservatives
3 tablespoons of brown sugar
1/4 cup of vegetable oil
1/2 cup of honey
A handful of seeds - I went for a mixed bag of pumpkin, sunflower, sesame and linseed
A handful of nuts - I picked Pecans simply because I love them
A pinch of cinnamon
1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

1. First start of by pre-heating the oven to 180C/160C fan/gas mark 4

2. Next, in a big bowl mix together the oats, sugar an cinnamon just so they're all one.

3. Add in your vanilla extract, vegetable oil and honey. Stir until all of the oats and equally covered in the mixture.

4. Add in your seeds and nuts of choice, then stir again so they're equally through the mix.

5. Next, line a deep baking tray with grease proof paper or brush some butter all over it to stop the mixture sticking. Then evenly add the mixture in to your dish. I like to drizzle some extra honey on top, but it's up to you.

6. Bake in the oven for around 20 minutes, but stir the mixture around 3/4 times whilst it's in the oven. Stirring the mixture whilst it's gooey and hot will help create the clusters to give it extra crunch.

7. Once it's slightly golden brown, take it out of the oven and leave it to sit so it can cool down. This will help it to harden slightly so that more clusters can be formed.

8. Once the mixture has cooled down transfer it to an air tight jar. I used a 1L Kilner jar from Wilkos, which I bought ages ago for £3. The recipe makes a perfect amount to just fill one of these jars to the top, and it should last you between a week and a half and 2 weeks if you eat it every day. Making it costs about £3, so cheaper than some granolas and so much more tasty!

  1. I really want to have a go at making my own granola as - like you said - the shop bought kind can be really fatty and expensive. This looks tasty and I love how simplistic it looks in a jar! Thanks for this post - defo guna try it out for myself :)

  2. Might have to try this out, I usually just stick to porridge because it's relatively healthy but it's so boring, even honey and fruit can't make me enjoy it!
